PA-UNP talks on National Govt.hits the rocks
Roy Mendis in Colombo, 6.50 PM SLT Tuesday August 28.2001. The official level talks between the ruling Peoples' Alliance (PA) and the opposition United National Party (UNP) on the formation of a government of national consensus hit the rocks on the final day today with the two parties deeply divided on the question of the Prime Ministership and the power that it would enjoy in an Executive Presidential system.

The two delegations, however, kept the door open for a review by saying that they would come back later in the evening fter consulting their respective leaders,President Chandrika Kumaratunga of the PA and Mr.Ranil Wickremesinghe of the UNP.

The PA apparently did not agree to the UNP's demand for a de facto, full fledged cabinet system of government with a UNP Prime Minister at the helm. The UNP apparently did not agree to the government's proposal to make the present Prime Minister Mr.Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, the Vice President.
