New cabinet increased to 23 members
Saroj Pathirana in London, Friday 14/09/01 1620 GMT. Former UNP stalwart Wijepala Mendis has also been sworn-in as the minister for Cultural affairs, Science and Technology increasing the number of cabinet members to twenty two. The Lanka Academic reliably learns that the state media was instructed to refrain from publishing the appointment until the rebel MP and minister Mendis's rival in Katana electorate Jeyaraj Fernandopullai was included in the cabinet and sworn in.

There have been angry protests in front of Mr. Fernandopullai's residence in Katana with his supporters calling for their leader to be included in the cabinet. Provided that ex-minister Arumugam Thondaman will also be offered a portfolio, the number of cabinet members would rise to 23 in breach of PA-JVP Memorandum of Understanding signed last week.
