Fresh elections on Dec.5: New parliament on New Year's Day
Roy Mendis in Colombo, 1.25 AM SLT thursday,2001. Fresh elections to the Sri Lankan parliament will be held on December 5 and a new parliament will be constituted on January 1, 2002,the Director of Information,Mr.Ariya Rubasinghe,said.

Parliament was dissolved on Oct.10, a day ahead of a vote on a motion of no-confidence against the Peoples' Alliance (PA) government led by Prime Minister Mr. Ratnasiri Wickramanayake.The government was set to lose the vote in view of a spate of defections on wednesday.
