Government to sign a MOU with LTTE - Rauf Hakeem
Saroj Pathirana in London, Friday 11/01/02 1810 GMT. United National Party (UNP) led government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) are to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) just before the existing month long cease-fire ends, a senior government minister said. After talks with Norwegian peace delegation headed by deputy foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen, the leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Rauf Hakeem was optimistic of the mission but said that there are key issues still to be resolved, before peace talks begin. Mr. Hakeem, who also serves as the Minister for Ports and Shipping said the means of creating confidence between the Muslim community and the LTTE was a major concern in the discussions held today.

"We put forward our concerns. Norway promised to forward these issues to the government and come back with the reaction" SLMC leader told BBC’s Sandeshaya. He further added that it is his understanding that a MOU will be signed in the near future and the truce will thereafter be extended as a one cease-fire from both parties.
