Tigers want ban lifted before talks
Gulf-News, 17 January 2002. Tamil Tiger guerrillas yesterday urged the Sri Lankan government to lift a ban on their organisation before any talks between the two sides begin, but Colombo in a cautious reaction said the issue would be taken up later. Liberation Tigers for Tamil Eelam's political wing head S.P. Thamil Chelvam yesterday told a group of journalists visiting the northern Wanni region that they wanted the proscription on their organisation lifted if they were to open talks with the Sri Lankan government. But the government said the issue can be taken up by the Norwegian facilitator who is trying to bring the guerrillas and the government to the negotiating table. More...
