PA sends confusing signal on peace plan

Sri Lanka's main opposition People's Alliance (PA) sent out contradictory signals about the government's new peace initiative to open talks with the Tamil guerrillas and find a political settlement to the Tamil minority ethnic conflict. Former foreign minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, opening a two-day debate on the government's policy statement, declared that the PA was supportive of the UNP government's peace initiative and had the full backing of President Chandrika Kumaratunga to make that statement.
