Over 26,000 Candidates to Contest Sri Lanka's Local Elections
Nothern Light, Sunday, February 10, 2002 10:01 PM EST . Over 26,000 candidates from 28 political parties and 245 independent groups will contest for 4, 394 positions in 311 local government bodies in 23 districts in Sri Lanka on March 20, according to the Elections Department. Elections for two other districts, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu in the north of the country, will be held on March 25. There are 10,512 youths among the 26,312 candidates as a 40 percent participation of youth is mandatory according to the election law. More...
