In Lanka’s north, life’s tough even without embargo
Times of India, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2002 1:13:38 AM . 13:38 AM ] ALLAVI: When the Sri Lankan government lifted the economic embargo and permitted goods to be sent to LTTE-controlled areas in the north, most of the people were ecstatic. But nearly a month later shops may be filled with goods, but the people are still suffering. The bruises of almost two decades of war are most evident in the northern Vanni area where abject poverty aggravated by fighting has ruined peoples’ lives. “This is the fourth place I have settled in, we were displaced in ‘95 and have been moving since then,” says Kanagamma, who lives in a thatched hut. In the entire Vanni area, two-thirds of the more than 300,000 people are displaced. “No government has ever done anything for us,” said M X Karunaratnam. More...
