Colombo shocked at Tiger arms shipment
Gulf-News, 18 February 2002. Colombo's political and military hierarchy met yesterday to discuss the shock news of the fourth beaching in two months on Friday night of suspected arms shipments by the rebel Tamil Tigers (LTTE). The Sri Lankan government plans to tell Norwegian officials, who are working to bring about a negotiated settlement to the two-decade long northern separatist insurgency in Sri Lanka, that the rebel act by the Sea Tigers was not a confidence building measure ahead of proposed peace talks. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was due back in Colombo last night from an official visit to Singapore, was in touch with Defence Minister Tilak Marapana by telephone as top brass of the armed forces were analysing what the military believes is a 'logistic run' by the LTTE.
