Sri Lanka says military budget in disarray
Yahoo India, 19 February 2002. Sri Lanka's military budget for the current year was in disarray because the government did not know how much money was spent on some major items in the past year, Defence Minister Tilak Marapane said on Monday. Marapane said he expected actual spending for 2002 to be less than the estimated 60 billion rupees ($645 million) spent on defence last year, but added the total could be the same or more if the cost of unpaid items was added in. "But some of the purchases that have been made during the last one year and one-and-a-half years (are) very difficult to identify," Marapane told a news conference. More...
