Tigers recruit 7,763 new cadres since cease-fire
Bandula Jayasekara in Colombo, SLT 9.00 a.m Wednesday 15 January. Latest intelligence reports states that The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have recruited 7,763 new cadres since the signing of the cease-fire agreement in February last year bringing the total strength of the LTTE to 16,000. Analyst say that this is disturbing news for the government and that if the current trend continues the LTTE is likely to double its present cadres strength in two years time which means a standing army of around 30,000 an increase of 250% of their strength. According to news reports Anton Balasingham has warned that the LTTE in possession of much more advanced weapons, especially modern artillery which has caused great concern among the security forces specially with regard to the issue of the High Security Zones. A senior diplomat told The Lanka Academic that he could confirm that the LTTE also received 6 arms shipments during the ceasefire. Tigers have already demanded that Tamil police officers in the North and the East should quit and join the LTTE Police. Yesterday SLFP Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera showed an advertisement published by the LTTE in a Tamil daily registered in Sri Lanka, calling for people to join the LTTE' police force. He questioned how could the government allow this type of advertisements to be published in newspapers registered with the government
