Government, opposition prepare for polls
LAcNet Special Correspondent in Colombo, 8:50pm SLT, Monday January 20,2003. Ruling United National Front and the main opposition PA are secretly preparing for a possible forthcoming general election, privately owned newspaper said here yesterday.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will personally supervise a complete re-organisation of the UNF starting February 1, which might include key changes in the top party posts, the Lankadeepa said.

It is also learnt that the UNF is preparing to appoint two committees comprising ten senior ministers and ten backbenchers to make recommendations to face a possible election and any other crisis situation.

Four consultants from the United Kingdom have already arrived here to advice the ruling party, the newspaper said.

Meanwhile, the PA has already conducted several meetings with the JVP hierarchy to come into a common front to defeat the UNF. The two groups were also meeting today while they were expected to map up the joint agenda by the end of this week.

The PA has also met Ceylon Workers’ Congress Leader Minister Arumugam Thondaman and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress rebel group leader A.L.M. Athaulla. The two parties are members of the ruling coalition.
