Nambiar sets tough terms on HSZs
HT, January 27. The retired Indian general acting as military consultant to the Sri Lankan government has suggested that the Tamil rebels be asked to withdraw from frontline positions to designated safe areas. They should also deposit their heavy weapons with a neutral (outside) party, if the High Security Zones (HSZs) in the Jaffna peninsula are to be modified to settle civilian refugees, the The Sunday Island said.The paper said that Lt-General Satish Nambiar had made these recommendations in his first report on the general question of restructuring of the Sri Lankan Army, and that he would be coming back to make a special study of the HSZs, on the invitation of the Sri Lankan government. Child protection chief lashes out at inaction
The Island, January 27. The head of the country’s national child protection body last week lashed out at the international and local community for clamping shut on the LTTE’s recruitment of child soldiers, saying that anyone drafting children to the armed forces could not be for peace."My core issue is why are we quiet about child abductions and recruitment?" said Prof. Harendra de Silva, chairman of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA), directing his criticism also at local and international aid agencies and NGOs."I have spoken to members of the international community... I can even mention names if it comes to a push...," he elaborated in an interview with The Island. Swiss Ambassador discuss urgent humanitarian issues with the LTTE
Bandula Jayasekara in Colombo, SLT 7.00 a.m Monday 27 January. The Ambassador for Switzerland in Sri Lanka Bernardino Regazzoni said that he discussed matters related to urgent humanitarian needs in the North and the East when he met with LTTE's political wing leader, Thamil Chelvam last week. Regazzoni told The Lanka Academic " Two officials from the Division for human security of the Swiss federal Department of foreign affairs accompanied me. They are in charge of projects in the sector of de-mining, such as the one run by the Swiss Foundation for Mine Action. I visited thereafter this project in Vavunya." The meeting between the LTTE and the Swiss delegation took place at the LTTE's political headquarters in Killinochici. Thamil Chelvam told the Swiss delegation that people would loose confidence in the peace process if immediate attention was not paid to the basic humanitarian needs of the people and restoring normal life in the North and the East. In addition to the meetings in Sri Lanka, on Friday leader of the governments peace negotiation team and Minister G.L.Peiris met with the Swiss Foreign Minister Calmy -Rey in Bern to discuss the situation in Sri Lanka and the progress of the peace talks between the government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE and also on the future involvement of Switzerland in Sri Lanka. Switzerland is planning to support in the promotion of peace in the country, which compliment and support the official peace process. According to the Ambassador, Switzerland has decided to increase its funding for re-construction and rehabilitation from 6 million francs to 7.5 million Swiss francs.
