Seven Years after the Central Bank attack- Grieving families remember their dear ones
Bandula Jayasekara in Colombo,
SLT 9.30 a.m Friday 31 January.
It is seven years today since the LTTE attacked the Central Bank in Colombo
killing number of innocent people, Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims. Several
remembrance notices have appeared in memory of the dead in the newspapers
today. One memoriam published in the Daily News by a grieving mother in
memory of her daughter Enoka Vinodini Gunaratna says "I only look at the
traitors with sympathy when they shake hands with your murders. The guiding
light of my life was dimmed seven years ago." Another family says that they
have restored an abandoned tank in Tanamalwila to hand over to the poor
farmers in the area in memory of their family member and 41 others who lost
their lives in the Central Bank bombing. When The Lanka Academic questioned
why the country has forgotten all the innocent people killed during the
attack, Governor of the Central Bank A.S. Jayawardane told The Lanka
Academic " We(The Central Bank) will never forget them. We have showed our
appreciation to them and to all other who helped us to rise from the ashes."
Jayawardane said that the Central Bank held a special ceremony today to
remember their dead colleagues and friends with the participation of most of
the families including the ones who were blinded by the attack. Last year
High Court judge Sarath Ambeypitiya handed over a 200 year prison sentence
to LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabhakran for the attack on the Central Bank.

Black Tigers are strengthening themselves- Opposition Leader
Bandula Jayasekara in Colombo,
SLT 10.00 p.m Thursday 30 January 2003.
Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse warned today in parliament that the LTTE
was strengthening itself militarily and still recruiting underage children.
He said that the government should demand that the LTTE disband its Black
Tiger suicide squad because even the Black Tigers were strengthening
themselves right now. Rajapakse added that he had doubts about the sincerity
of the LTTE. The Opposition Leader undertook a visit to Jaffna last week.
He is expected to visit the Eastern Province soon. Former Prime Minister
Ratnasiri Wickremanayake warned the UNF government not to belittle the armed
forces and asked the government to take the opinion of the armed forces
seriously.
