Indians are expressing shock at the loss of the space shuttle Columbia and the first Indian-born woman to travel in space, 41-year-old astronaut Kalpana Chawla. Senior Indian officials said they were saddened by the loss of the shuttle, and offered condolences to Kalpana Chawla's family. Speaking just prior to the shuttle Columbia's launch last month, Kalpana Chawla said she was awed by space travel. "Just looking at earth, looking at the stars during the night part of earth; just looking at our planet roll by and the speed at which it goes by and the awe that it inspires; just so many such good thoughts come to your mind when you see all that," she said. Seven Hundred fifty cases of child recruitment yet to be resolved- UNICEF
Bandula Jayasekara in Colombo, SLT 4.30 p.m Saturday 1 February. Executive Director of UNICEF, Carol Bellamy said today that 750 cases of child recruitment have been reported to the UNICEF and the cases are yet to be resolved. LTTE has released 350 children to their families since November 2001. She said that UNICEF was prepared to assist children and reunite them with their families and to extend other support. Addressing a media conference at the end of a three day visit to Sri Lanka Bellamy said, There are no guarantees in life and I cannot assure if the assurance the LTTE gave us would be met. But, we are hopeful and we could consider it as a positive sign." Bellamy believed that the LTTE has to involve children as a part of the peace process. She added, " You cannot have peace unless you take children in to account. You got to invest in children and we must give children an opportunity to fully participate in this peace process. Guns have been silenced for some time in Sri Lanka and it has helped children." Bellamy announced that LTTE's Thamil Chelvam agreed to meet with the UNICEF immediately after the 5th round of peace talks in Berlin to set out the concrete steps to implement LTTE's commitment to ensure no children are recruited to their armed forces and to release children who have participated in armed combat. During her 3 days visit to the island Bellamy held meetings with President Chandrika Kumaratunge, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, Minister of Health and Education in Colombo. She also met with LTTE's political wing leader Thamil Chelvam and visited Killinochci.
