Defence Minister and ministry lied- President Kumaratunge
Bandula Jayasekara in Colombo,
SLT 1.45 p.m Tuesday 11 February.
President Chandrika Kumaratunge charged today that the minister of defence
Thilak Marapona and the ministry lied and indulged in deliberate deception
on the recent incident where three LTTE sea tigers committed suicide after
having set fire to the trawler carrying arms in the island of Delft.
Presidential Spokesman Harim Pieris said that defence Minister Marapona
vacillated for a long time in taking any decision against the sea tigers
after it was established that they had violated the cease-fire agreement
between the government and the LTTE. Pieris said that President Kumaratunge
will not hesitate to use her constitutional powers if her orders were not
properly implemented. She wanted the ceasefire agreement strictly
implemented. Pieris said that President Kumaratunge demands that
international agencies such as UNICEF be given unfettered access to the LTTE
camps to secure the release of child soldiers.
