Armitage Says U.S., Other Nations Have Role in Ending Sri Lankan Conflict
Wahington File, February 15. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage says the United States and other nations have a role to play in settling the conflict in Sri Lanka. "The United States should be playing a role in concert with other nations, committing our human and financial resources to settling this conflict because it can be done. And because it's the right thing to do," Armitage said in a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington February 14.The conflict in Sri Lanka has claimed 65,000 lives over the last 20 years.Armitage praised the government of Norway for bringing the warring parties to the negotiating table. He also praised Sri Lankan President Kumaratunga for her 1995 peace plan. More...

US holds out prize to Tamil Tiger rebels
ProLog, WASHINGTON, Feb 14 (AFP) . The United States will consider removing the Tamil Tigers from its list of terrorist organisations if the Sri Lankan rebel group proves it has renounced violence, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said Friday. He also warned that the country's drive to end a civil war which has claimed 60,000 lives also depended on unity in the government in Colombo, which has been wracked by infighting. More...

Girls in School Uniform abducted by the LTTE
Bandula Jayasekara in Colombo, SLT 2.45 p.m Saturday 15 February. Two Fourteen Year old girls in school uniform have been abducted by four female LTTE cadres yesterday military spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne told The Lanka Academic. He said that they were apprehended by the Navy at the Sampalathivu checkpoint in Trincomalee last evening and the two schoolgirls told the Navy that they were abducted when they were returning from school. The Navy had later questioned the female LTTE cadres and handed them over to the Uppuveli police station with the two schoolgirls. According to Karunaratne the Police had made arrangements to hand over the girls to their parents and also reported the matter to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission. Brigadier Karunaratne said that the LTTE continues to recruit school children despite all the assurance given to the international community.
