Sri Lanka 's new opposition alliance seeks to oust government
Associated Press, Thu March 6, 2003 08:32 EST . - - COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) Accusing the Sri Lankan government of giving too many concessions to Tamil Tiger rebels and failing to control prices, the country's new opposition alliance will launch a campaign to unseat the regime, a lawmaker said Thursday. Importation of aircraft parts without relevant permits is an offense in Sri Lanka - . There was no immediate response from the government.

The main opposition People's Alliance and Marxist People's Liberation Front decided to join hands last month.

Both parties together control 93 seats in the 225-member parliament, and the ruling United National Front coalition's has 114 seats. The remaining seats are controlled by Tamil political parties that back the ruling coalition.

Bandaranaike said the new opposition expects 500,000 people to participate in an anti-government rally Monday.

The Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tiger rebels signed a cease-fire on Feb. 22, 2002, aimed at ending a 19-year ethnic conflict that killed 65,000 people.
