Sri Lankan PM says peace with Tamil rebels on track

COLOMBO, Mar 12, 2003 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Wednesday that an incident involving the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels early this week will not hamper the ongoing Norwegian-brokered peace process in the country. "The incident will have no bearing on the peace process. We have passed a difficult year and the people have enjoyed a year free of bombs (explosions)," Wickremesinghe said while addressing a rally of his ruling United National Party in the central town of Kandy.

You would think on a warm Saturday morning, children in Sri Lanka
would be watching a cricket match and cheering on their heroes. No,
not in Kew Road, Slave Island, a multi-ethnic enclave just five
minutes away from the exclusive Trans Asia Hotel in Colombo's central
down town area. The cricket match played on at the Malay Cricket Club,
on Saturday 25, January but thirty children were flocked round five
computers in a little rectangular room of the Vocational Training
Center (VTC) run by the Sri Lanka Malay Association's (SLMA) Rupee

Helicopter carrying Norwegian deputy foreign minister makes emergency landing in Sri Lanka due to bad weather

- - COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) A helicopter carrying Norwegian deputy foreign minister Vidar Helgesen and top Sri Lankan government officials made an emergency landing in central Sri Lanka - Wednesday evening due to bad weather, police said. No one was injured. Helgesen arrived in Sri Lanka - Wednesday afternoon for discussions with government and Tamil Tiger rebel officials ahead of a sixth round of peace talks to be held in Hakone, Japan next week.

Tamil Tiger rebels have warned they are considering suspending participation in peace talks with the Sri Lankan Government. Considering the options
The move follows the sinking of one of their ships by the navy on Monday. Chief rebel negotiator, Anton Balasingham, told the BBC it was one option being considered by the rebel leadership but a final decision had not been taken yet. The Tamil Tigers say they want to register a strong protest over the sinking of their ship and the killing of the eleven crew members on board.
