Ministers delay Sri Lanka flights
BBC News, Thursday, 13 March, 2003. Commercial airlines in Sri Lanka run the risk of losing customers because government ministers are insisting on delaying flights.

A year-old ceasefire with Tamil Tiger rebels means commercial aircraft have resumed flying to Jaffna in the north after a break of four years. But they are so often delayed by ministers travelling on official visits that the service is doing little to foster ethnic reconciliation. One airline says it is bringing in a tourist charter plane next week which could cater for government ministers visiting Jaffna, so serious is the problem of planes being held up.

On Wednesday a Serendib flight from Jaffna to Colombo was delayed by two hours because a non-cabinet minister for educational services, Suranimala Rajapakse, was lunching with a local MP. Elderly and sick passengers were loaded on to the aircraft with no air conditioning or refreshments and kept waiting while the minister then drank tea with the Jaffna security force commander at the airport. No, not in Kew Road, Slave Island, a multi-ethnic enclave just five minutes away from the exclusive Trans Asia Hotel in Colombo's central down town area. The cricket match played on at the Malay Cricket Club, on Saturday 25, January but thirty children were flocked round five computers in a little rectangular room of the Vocational Training Center (VTC) run by the Sri Lanka Malay Association's (SLMA) Rupee Fund. Chandrika for a separate unit for Muslims
Ranmali Wijesuriya in Colombo, SLT 7.15 a.m Friday 14 March. President Chandrika Kumaratunge has assured Muslim leaders that she and her party, Peoples Alliance is supportive of the proposal for a separate administrative unit for the Muslims. She has also backed the proposal for an independent Muslim delegation at the peace talks. According to news reports President Kumaratunge had given her assurance when she met with a delegation of Muslim leaders including Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) leader Rauff Hakeem, National Unity Alliance (NUA) leader Ferial Ashraff and Noordeen Mashoor of the Athaullah faction yesterday. The three Muslim leaders met with the President to brief her on the current situation. President Chandrika Kumaratunge had also expressed her concern regarding the continuous harassment of the Muslims in the North and the East. She had told the delegation that the government should take effective steps to stop the harassment of the Muslims in the North/East.

Norway struggles to salvage Sri Lanka peace bid
ProLog, COLOMBO, March 13 (AFP) . Norwegian peace brokers Thursday pressured Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels to remain in negotiations after they hinted at a possible pull-out from next week's talks in Japan, Tamil sources said. The elusive Tiger supremo, Velupillai Prabhakaran, did not show up for crucial discussions Thursday with Norway's Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen who has been trying to salvage the peace process since the navy sank a rebel vessel on Monday.
