More than 830 children orphaned in the South, officials expect the number to rise ‘drastically’ once data is collected from North East
Alladin Hussein in Colombo, January 12, 2004, 1.04 a.m.. With the UNICEF estimating that nearly 40% of the dead are children, reports reaching the Lanka Academic states that more than 830 children have been orphaned in the South of Sri Lanka only due to late last year’s tsunami. However sources said that this number will either double or triple once the statistics are collected from the severely hit North East. Unconfirmed reports claimed that more than 2000 children had been orphaned in the North East districts alone. However, the confirmed data will be available only in a few weeks time, officials said.

“It is being counted by the UNICEF, that about 40% of the dead by the tidal wave disaster were children. It is reported that 50% of the dead in Ampara District alone are children. While, about 3000 children are estimated to be dead in the Northern Province,” reports said.

Eastern province continues to suffer due to the lack of basic necessities
Alladin Hussein in Colombo, January 12, 2004, 12.51 a.m.. Tamil National Alliance MP K. Sivajalingam today stressed that despite the Ampara district being the worst hit in the North East due to the Tsunami, authorities have taken very little interest in cleaning up the debris and disinfecting the polluted landmass for resettlement. “Tamils and Muslims living in Ampara have been affected very badly. The entire habitats present an eerie situation devoid of humans. The displaced people huddled up in the welfare centers are not being provided with adequate requirements, whether it be food or clothing. Starvation forces them to go out and beg for meals,” he noted.

He also alleged that in the Batticaloa town itself, the relief centers located in St. Michaels College and Chavukkadi have not received adequate day-to-day needs of the displaced housed therein. “To move out these unfortunate people from the paradigm of frustration, hopelessness and indignity, it is the international community and the NGO’s that need to step in fast and act, squarely facing the bureaucratic and political boulders,” Mr. Sivajalingam said.
