UPDATE 1-Tsunami to cut Sri Lanka GDP by 1 percentage point
reuters.com, Tue Jan 18, 2005 06:47 PM ET-. WASHINGTON, Jan 18 (Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund said on Tuesday preliminary estimates show that Sri Lanka's 2005 gross domestic product growth could be cut by one percentage point due to the Asian tsunami. In documents published on the IMF Web site, the global lender also said 2005 tourism earnings in Sri Lanka are expected to decline by at least 15 percent over 2004, but major export sectors had not been seriously affected. Prabhakaran wants a ‘brighter future’ for tsunami children
Alladin Hussein in Colombo, January 18, 2005, 9.52 p.m.. Amidst allegations that the LTTE was recruiting tsunami child victims to its force, Tamil Tiger Leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran today stressed the need for a more conducive environment for children, which would lead them to a brighter future. “The most traumatised due to the tsunami destruction are infants and children. It is our priority therefore to focus attention in the area of the psychological condition of children. We need to create a conducive environment for the children that can lead them to a bright future. By concentrating on setting up playgrounds and a pleasant school environment, we can make the children get over the trauma,” he said addressing intellects during a meeting today, thereby dismissing rumours that he was one of the tsunami dead.

Prabhakaran also called upon the Sri Lankan Tamils living abroad to undertake meaningful accelerated steps to bring about a quick transformation to the lives of the affected people. “Providing our people with necessary equipments, and setting in place income generation projects on an individual or institutional basis, we strongly believe, that we can create a sense of optimism in the lives of our people without waiting for the arrival of anticipated international assistance,” he added.
