Lankan survivors face new horrors
gulf-daily-news.com, 20 January 2005. The aftermath of the tsunami disaster has brought new horrors to the people of Sri Lanka, says an aid worker from Bahrain. ROBERT SMITH reports CHILD abuse, rape, body-snatching, disease and hunger are some of the horrors facing Sri Lankan survivors of last month's tsunami. Thousands of traumatised victims need counselling, according to a Bahrain-based family who flew home to help with relief work. Angelo Embuldeniya, aged 21, returned to his home country with his father Jeya - a cost controller at Bapco - and mother Delrine in the wake of the disaster. The situation on the ground is improving, as the stench from dead bodies gradually disappears as they are cleared, he told the GDN by telephone. More...

Sri Lanka 's president and Norwegian foreign minister hold talks on aid distribution
Associated Press, Fri January 21, 2005 03:34 EST . COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) Sri Lanka's president and Norway's foreign minister held constructive talks Friday about the distribution of aid in the tsunami-battered nation and efforts to revive the stalled peace process with Tamil Tiger rebels, an official said. Foreign Minister Jan Petersen arrived in Sri Lanka on Thursday. On Saturday, he is to travel to the rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi to meet guerrilla leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

On Friday, Petersen met President Chandrika Kumaratunga, said Harim Peiris, the leader's spokesman.

``The meeting was very constructive. The whole issue of relief and rehabilitation was discussed,'' he said, but declined to give details. ``The peace process was discussed.''

Efforts to secure a permanent peace deal stalled in 2003 because of disagreements over rebel demands for autonomy.

The distribution of aid following the Dec. 26 tsunami, which killed at least 31,000 people in Sri Lanka, has also led to disputes, with the insurgents claiming disruptions in government aid reaching areas under their control.

Roads, rails, rebel area in Sri Lanka tsunami plan
Yahoo, Friday January 21, 6:49 PM. COLOMBO, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka plans to use 40 percent of its $3.5 billion tsunami recovery fund in new infrastructure projects and looks set to give Tamil Tiger rebels a piece of the pie, documents showed on Friday. A copy of the draft recovery plan obtained by Reuters makes no mention of the rebels, who accuse the government of denying them aid. But it outlines projects in at least one district that is almost entirely in rebel hands. Any funds flowing into rebel territory could stir controversy among the Sinhalese majority, while the prospect of gleaming new towns and transport links eating up over 40 percent of the mostly donor funded recovery budget was already under fire.
