Sri Lanka rebels say tsunami pushed politics aside
alertnet.org, 22 Jan 2005 12:45:24 GMT. KILINOCHCHI, Sri Lanka, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels said on Saturday they had put politics aside to clear up after the Asian tsunami, but added that swifter, fairer government aid distribution could boost peace prospects.

In contrast to their threat in November to resume a war for autonomy that killed 64,000 people, the rebels urged Sri Lanka's government to do more to build trust and open "new perspectives" for peace talks stalled for nearly two years.

"This is a sudden intervention of nature, for which we have to give total attention, leaving the political aspect aside," chief rebel negotiator Anton Balasingham said after top level talks between reclusive Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and Norwegian peace envoys. More...

Lankan survivors face new horrors
gulf-daily-news.com, 20 January 2005. The aftermath of the tsunami disaster has brought new horrors to the people of Sri Lanka, says an aid worker from Bahrain. ROBERT SMITH reports CHILD abuse, rape, body-snatching, disease and hunger are some of the horrors facing Sri Lankan survivors of last month's tsunami. Thousands of traumatised victims need counselling, according to a Bahrain-based family who flew home to help with relief work. Angelo Embuldeniya, aged 21, returned to his home country with his father Jeya - a cost controller at Bapco - and mother Delrine in the wake of the disaster. The situation on the ground is improving, as the stench from dead bodies gradually disappears as they are cleared, he told the GDN by telephone. More...

Improvising to Save Lives in Sri Lanka
Washington Post , Jan 21, 2005. SARVODAYAPURAM, Sri Lanka -- Never mind that the waves had just destroyed his home and office, left much of his village in ruins and killed 13 relatives, including his mother and sister. As a government employee, Ahamed Razak said, his first obligation was to the living. So he called a supervisor on a cell phone to ask for instructions and help. The supervisor could provide neither. Razak speaks with displaced people at a camp he set up near his village. He criticized relief groups such as the one that gave him a soccer ball instead of the generator he sought: "This is the requirement that we have? A football?" (Photos John Lancaster -- The Washington Post) "I'm standing on the roof," the distraught man told Razak from his flooded home on the morning of Dec. 26, adding, in effect, what do you expect me to do? It was an important lesson for Razak, 34, who said he quickly grasped that he would have to shoulder the primary burden of running relief efforts -- particularly at the outset -- for the 430 families he serves as chief administrator in Sarvodayapuram, an isolated fishing village and tourist haven on Sri Lanka's hard-hit southeastern coast.
