Chandrika gives open challenge to JVP: Quit government:-
webindia123.com,
February 14, 2005.
Sri Lanka President Chandrika Kumaratunga has challenged the radical Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), the major ally in her government, to quit the government if they don't agree with her policy and strategies.
"This is a joke. We cannot take the country forward like this. They are fighting over a word in the agreement with the LTTE. They can (JVP) leave the government if they wish to," the Daily Mirror quoted Chandrika as saying in her address to a public rally at Nittambuwa in the Gampaha district on Sunday.

Only 5% Containers are checked in Sri Lanka- Defence Expert Calls for Strict Supervision
Domnique De Melo in Colombo,
SLT 6.00 A.M Tuesday 15 February 2005.
In Sri Lanka only 5% of the containers are checked at the port daily with
hundreds of container loads getting cleared without proper checks. Customs
sources revealed that if proper action is not taken immediately to check the
containers coming into Sri Lanka especially after the Tsunami it would
become a serious security threat to the country. Our sources said that the
LTTE front organisation TRO (Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation) itself has
been receiving 27-30 containers a month since the Tsunami and most of them
were cleared without many checks. Most of these containers come from
European Countries and no one is aware what is inside these containers.
A defence expert living in Colombo said that it was important for Sri Lanka
to have strict checks not only of the TRO containers but the other
containers coming under the guise of relief. Sri Lankan authorities were
able to detain the helicopter parts sent to two INGOs due to timely action
taken by some Custom officers. It prevented the helicopters getting in to
wrong hands. However the defence expert questioned “How many prohibited
items would have passed in to wrong hands due to lack of supervision. The
government must take immediate steps in the interest of the country”
