Lanka on alert ahead of Bush, Clinton visit

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka boosted security Saturday ahead of a visit by former US presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton to inspect American-funded tsunami relief projects, police said. Bush and Clinton will arrive in Colombo Sunday and hold talks with President Chandrika Kumaratunga before leaving Monday for Matara, 160 kilometres (100 miles) south of here to inspect the rebuilding of homes and visit trauma counselling projects funded by the US Agency for International Development. Fears for the orphans of Sri Lanka in aid limbo
timesonline.co.uk, February 20, 2005 . AMONG the orphans of the tsunami, Manju Dissanayake, 12, is one of the lucky few. He lost his parents when the wave crashed ashore on the beaches of southern Sri Lanka. But he now lives with his aunt in a tent erected in the tranquil grounds of a Buddhist temple called Naga Rama Purama. His sisters, who also survived, have gone elsewhere. “I’m already going to school again,” said Manju. “I like it here. When I grow up, I think I want to be a monk, too.” The abbot, W Panyajoti, smiled benevolently at this declaration but firmly ruled it out for the moment. “Manju is very popular with our novices here because he’s so cheerful. Sri Lanka military accuses Tigers of provocation
xinhuanet.com, Sat 19th Feb 17:56GMT. Sri Lankan military said Saturday that they had complained to the international truce monitors over alleged provocative action made by the Tamil Tigers.

Brigadier Daya Ratnayake, the military spokesman, said the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) had been alerted to an incident offiring in the air by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels in the northern Jaffna Peninsula.

Ratnayake said the LTTE members has arrived near the Muhamalai army point in the Jaffna Peninsula and fired in the air. The incident happened around 8.30 p.m. (1430 GMT) Friday.

"We have lodged a complaint with the SLMM as we treat this as aviolation of the cease-fire agreement", Ratnayake said.

In another incident a few Tiger members had verbally abused themilitary near an army bunker at Chenkaladi in the eastern districtof Batticaloa. More...
