World Bank increases tsunami aid to Sri Lanka
chinadaily.com.cn, FEBRUARY 25. The World Bank on Thursday approved an additional $75 million in emergency aid for Sri Lanka's tsunami recovery and reconstruction effort, bringing to $150 million the total assistance made available this month. The new funding will help victims of the December disaster rebuild houses, provide employment opportunities and fund repairs to infrastructure systems including roads and water supply, the World Bank said in a statement. Of the funds approved on Thursday, $30 million is a grant and the rest is a credit from the bank's lowest-cost financing arm, the International Development Association, the statement said. "The financing package approved today is geared to help people get their lives back, but as the recovery and rebuilding progresses and as other donors come to the table, we will be flexible about the areas we finance," said Peter Harrold, World Bank Country Director for Sri Lanka. CWC drops bombshell, just hours after JVP threatened to pull out from Government
Munza Mushtaq in Colombo, February 24, 2005, 11.20 p.m.. The already crisis ridden Alliance Government was dealt with a further blow today after two members of its main Tamil ally submitted their resignation from their ministerial portfolios. A Minister and Deputy Minister of the Ceylon Workers Congress submitted the resignation and warned that the it’s entire eight MPs will withdraw support from the Government if the Alliance fails to take immediate action on several vital matters. CWC sources told the Lanka Academic that the situation between President Kumaratunga’s Government and the CWC had fueled up after another Tamil MP, who was not part of the CWC had declared open a playground which was reportedly build by CWC leader Arumugam Thondaman. The CWC had also said that despite their continuous Opposition, the Government was going ahead with constructing the Upper Kotmale Hydro Power project.

The CWC members had reportedly complained to several senior Alliance Ministers about these matters, but they had had shrugged off the matter. At the time this report was filed, the CWC had still not taken an official decision whether to withdraw support from the Government, but an official decision was expected soon. “If the CWC does pull out from the Government, the Alliance will lose their majority in Parliament,” sources added. This new development comes just hours after the Government’s main ally, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna warned the Government it too would pull out from the Alliance if President Chandrika Kumaratunga agreed to resume peace talks based on the LTTE demanded Interim Self Governing Authority.

Associated Press, Thu February 24, 2005 06:35 EST . COLOMBO, Feb. 24 (Kyodo) _ Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga's main coalition ally, the Marxist People's Liberation Front (JVP), threw an obstacle Thursday in the way of the government reviving peace talks with Tamil rebels by publicly declaring firm opposition to any talks beginning on the basis of setting up an ''interim authority'' for the country's north and east, the area claimed by the rebels as a Tamil homeland. The JVP, a major stakeholder in the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance, said it can in no way agree with the government-proposed interim authority proposal, made in a government statement issued on the occasion of the third anniversary Wednesday of a cease-fire between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, which it views as a blueprint to separation...
