Muslim leader warns of communal violence if Government does not stop building Buddha Statues
Munza Mushtaq in Colombo,
March 26, 2005, 4.50 p.m..
Leader of Sri Lanka’s main Muslim party has warned of communal clashes if authorities do not take immediate and appropriate steps to stop the construction of any future Buddha Statues in Muslim predominant areas.
Making a speech in Parliament, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem urged the government to avoid the construction of any more Buddha statues in the Muslim majority areas of the East in order to prevent possible communal clashes. "The government must stop this. It has the potential to incite communal violence and disrupt centuries of harmony between the Muslims and Buddhists in the East".
He further expressed confidence in the members of the House saying "I hope the members would understand the sensitivities in this issue. He claimed that Buddha statues was constructed in Ullei,, Pothuvil two months ago by some political elements who wanted to shift the racial balance by planting unsuspecting Sinhala villagers in Muslim dominant areas.
‘Buddha statues are suddenly being erected in tsunami affected areas in the East. Statues are coming up even before houses are built. This might even threaten the peace process and the National Security" he claimed.

Joint mechanism entirely within Lankan constitution
hindustantimes.com,
March 25.
The Sri Lankan government-LTTE "Joint Mechanism" to administer post-tsunami reconstruction is entirely within the constitution of Sri Lanka and is not at all like the controversial Interim Self Governing Authority (ISGA) suggested by the LTTE in 2003.
This gives rise to the hope that an agreement will be reached soon.
Speaking to the Foreign Correspondents' Association of Sri Lanka here on Thursday, the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar said that the Joint Mechanism was "wholly dissimilar" to the ISGA, which had not mentioned the Sri Lankan parliament and it judiciary. The ISGA had sought a 200 km exclusive economic zone off the North Eastern coast. The LTTE had sought a monopoly over the body.
The Joint Mechanism, on the other hand, had "wide representation" and it was "pluralistic", Kadirgamar said. It would have representatives of all the three major communities in the North East, namely, the Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalas. It would have, besides government representatives, the representatives of NGOs and other interest groups.

Muslims expresses concern over their exclusion in the joint mechanism structure
Munza Mushtaq in Colombo,
March 26, 2005, 4.52 p.m..
The Sri Lankan Government is yet to clarify the position of the Muslim community in the proposed Tsunami joint mechanism structure. “Amidst Reports that Foreign Affairs Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar has already initiated a process of outlining the mechanism structure to foreign diplomats, its disheartening to note that the Muslims who was one of the worst affected in the tidal wave catastrophe are being sidelines in this important mechanism,” Muslim political sources noted.
A website dedicated to Sri Lankan Muslim news (www.lankamuslims.com) in its editorial has also noted, “Despite the Muslim community being the most affected in the Tidal Waves that struck the nation on 26th of December, where 60% of the damage and over 50% of the total deaths are of Muslims, neither the Government of Sri Lanka nor the LTTE, who are involved in a series of meetings with the mediation of the Norwegian facilitators, have so far considered the inclusion of Muslims in the discussions or in the proposed Joint Mechanism”.
State Media newspaper today reported that Foreign Minister Kadirgamar Addressing the Foreign Correspondents Association in Colombo noted that the Government's main objective was to enter into a joint mechanism with the Tigers to distribute foreign aid for tsunami victims in the North-East, some parts of which are held by the LTTE.”
