Army: Suspected Tamil rebels kill man in eastern Sri Lanka
Associated Press, Fri April 1, 2005 12:30 EST . - - COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels shot dead a man in eastern Sri Lanka - Friday amid growing violence in the region, the military said. The Tamil Tigers have been accused of killing dozens of rival group members despite a Norway-brokered cease-fire signed in 2002. The violence escalated in eastern Sri Lanka - since an unprecedented split within the group last year led by a senior commander from the region.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam rebels have fought the government since 1983 to create a separate state for ethnic minority Tamils, accusing the majority Sinhalese of discrimination. The conflict killed 65,000 people before the truce.
