Land slides kill at least 13 in central Sri Lanka
Associated Press, Fri January 12, 2007 05:44 EST . COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) _ At least 13 people were killed in landslides in the tea growing region of central Sri Lanka on Friday, officials said, as bad weather was delaying rescue and relief.

The military listed 13 dead in its Web site, adding that 450 homes have been affected, leaving 5,000 residents without shelter.

``There are many places where there have been landslides,'' said D.P.G. Kumarasiri, a senior bureaucrat in central Nuwara Eliya district 180 kilometers (117 miles) east of capital, Colombo.

Kumarasiri said access has been cut off in some areas and officials are trying to evacuate people.

However, bad weather was delaying the efforts, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Disaster Management.

``We have sought help from the air force, but bad weather and poor visibility are delaying rescue and relief,'' said Lal Sarathakumara.

The National Building Research Organization has sent its people to the area to identify areas at risk for landslides and evacuate people, said official Kumari Weerasinghe.

Nuwara Eliya is a mountainous region known for lush tea gardens. It is prone to landslides. Discuss this story

Kohona is Sri Lanka s new Foreign Secretary
hindustantimes.com, January 12, 2007. Dr Palitha Kohona, Secretary General of the Sri Lankan government's Peace Secretariat, has been appointed Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following the retirement of HMGS Palihakkara.

Kohona told Hindustan Times on Friday that he would be in-charge of the Peace Secretariat also, for the time being.

Kohona is not a Foreign Serviceman. A Supreme Court lawyer with a doctorate from Cambridge, he was chief of the UN Treaty Section when he was invited by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to head the Peace Secretariat in April 2006 replacing Jayantha Dhanapala, who had become Sri Lanka's candidate for the post of UN Secretary General.

President Rajapaksa has confidence in the articulate and suave Kohona, especially because they think alike on the question of terrorism and the way the LTTE should be tackled. More... Discuss this story

Police say roadside bomb killed 2 policemen in northern Vavuniya
Associated Press, Fri January 12, 2007 01:15 EST . - - COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) A roadside bomb exploded in the government-held northern town of Vavuniya Friday, killing two policemen and wounding one, the area's police chief said. The attack came a day after an anti-terror unit captured a rebel base and seven smaller camps around eastern Sri Lanka - , killing at least four guerrillas.

Fighting has escalated in the past year in Sri Lanka - 's north and east, where most of the country's 3.1 million ethnic Tamil minority live.

The Tigers have been fighting for more than 20 years for a separate homeland for the Tamils after decades of discrimination by the majority Sinhalese.

Both sides claim to be adhering to a 2002 cease-fire, but resurgent violence has left more than 3,600 people dead in the past year.

More than 65,000 people died in the conflict before the cease-fire was signed. Discuss this story
