Sri Lanka shows air capability after rebel attack
Xinhua, March 28. The Sri Lankan Air Force carried out air raids against Tamil Tiger positions in the island's north and east on Tuesday in a demonstration of its air capability after a Tamil Tiger attack on the main air base.

Group Captain Ajantha Silva, the Air Force spokesman, said "we took three identified targets of the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam)."

He said the locations were in the eastern Thoppigala area, and in the northern areas of Mannar and Kanagarayankulam.

"Our capability remains as before," Silva stressed, referring to Monday's predawn attack carried out by the LTTE on the Air Force's Katunayake base adjoining the Colombo international airport. More... Discuss this story

Sri Lankan gov't ready to hold talks with rebels
Xinhua, March 28. The Sri Lankan government said Tuesday that it is still open to have talks with the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) despite the latter's aerial attack on the country's main military base on Monday.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told reporters here that the government's meeting with the LTTE "has been independent of all incidents."

Bogollagama said Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse is very positive for a negotiated settlement to the island country's ethnic issue.

"Our offer to talk with the LTTE is very old and the offer is still there," said the foreign minister. More... Discuss this story

Associated Press, Tue March 27, 2007 06:17 EDT . COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) Fighter planes bombed Tamil Tiger positions in Sri Lanka's volatile northeast Tuesday, the military said, a day after the insurgents launched their first-ever airstrike that killed three airmen.

The air force targeted three Tamil Tiger guerrilla positions, but there was no information on damage or casualties, said air force spokesman Group Captain Ajantha Silva.

A rebel intelligence base in Thoppigala, in war-torn eastern Batticaloa district, was a target, as was a naval base and artillery position in the north, Silva said.
