Sri Lanka for united action against terrorism in SAARC
IndiaENews, march 31. Sri Lanka Saturday pressed for a collective fight against terrorism and underlined the need for legal measures to curb this scourge at a meeting of the SAARC foreign secretaries here.

In the aftermath of a recent strike by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) aircraft on a Sri Lankan air force base, Sri Lanka called for an early implementation of the SAARC Convention on Suppression of Terrorism and instituting a legal framework to fight against terrorism.

The Sri Lankan side raised the issue of terrorism at the Standing Committee meeting of SAARC here, Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon told reporters. More... Discuss this story

Sri Lanka says terrorism no threat to 8 percent growth
afp, march 31. COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lanka's president said "terrorism" was no threat to growth as he forecast that the island's economy would grow by eight percent in 2007.

President Mahinda Rajapakse also said he expected annual eight percent average growth over the next five years despite government forces battling Tamil Tiger rebels in the island's northeast. More... Discuss this story

Policeman, rebel, die in eastern Sri Lanka , military says

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels detonated a roadside bomb in eastern Sri Lanka - on Saturday, killing a police commando, while soldiers killed a guerrilla in a separate clash, the military said. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have fought the government since 1983 to create an independent homeland for Sri Lanka - 's 3.1 million ethnic Tamil minority who suffered decades of discrimination by the majority Sinhalese-dominated state.

A Norway brokered cease-fire in 2002 scaled down violence, raising hopes for a permanent end to one of Asia's longest civil conflicts that had killed 65,000 people by then.

Violence resumed in late 2005 killing another 4,000 people, according to European monitors.Discuss this story
