Sri Lanka: Troops kill 11 Tamil Tiger rebels in latest gun battles
somalinet.com, 9 april. SomaliNet) In the latest crackdown by Sri Lankan army on the Tamil Tiger rebels, the troops killed 11 of the rebel separatists in several gun battles across the volatile northern region and police seized a large cache of explosives, authorities said on Wednesday.

The killing comes amid Sri Lankan government promises to capture the rebels' de facto state in the north and crush the group by the end of the year. But diplomats and other observers say the army is facing more resistance than it had expected.

The fighting on Tuesday was along the front lines that separate government-controlled territory and rebel territory in the north, Sri Lankan Defence Ministry official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media. More...

Attack on arms sale to Sri Lanka
bbc, april 11. An arms trade monitoring group has criticised the sale of 10,000 military missiles by Slovakia to Sri Lanka.

Girl From Sri Lanka Gets Chance For New Life
bbc, april 11. BOSTON -- A girl from Sri Lanka has a chance for a new life -- thanks to well wishers from Massachusetts.

NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross reported Thursday that the child was burned on more than 50 percent of her body. A few days ago, Hasanthi, 4, arrived in the United States for treatment at Shriners Hospital in Boston.Known as Hasi, she's seen a lot of pain. Her American sponsor met Hasi in an orphanage in Sri Lanka.

Her father set her mother on fire while she was holding Hasi. The mother died. The child survived, but half her body was burned. They did all they could in Sri Lanka.

"The doctors done their best to her at that age. So, when I heard she get this opportunity, I feel so happy," said Ruveni Balasooriya. More... [Listen] Discuss this story
