Iranian president arrives in Sri Lanka
Xinhua, April 28. COLOMBO, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahamadinejad arrived in Sri Lanka Monday afternoon for a two-day official visit during which he will unveil several Iran-funded projects.

Ahamadinejad arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport near the capital Colombo around 7:50 p.m. (14:20 GMT) and he was welcomed by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, officials from Sri Lankan Presidential Secretariat said.

Ahamadinejad is scheduled to hold talks with President Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka and Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama during his visit. More...Discuss this story

Military: Police defuse time bomb at Sri Lankan bus station

RAVI NESSMAN - Associated Press Writer - COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) Police found and defused a makeshift time bomb Monday that was set to go off at a bus station in central Sri Lanka - during the crowded morning rush hour, the military said. The rebels have fought since 1983 to create an independent homeland for minority ethnic Tamils, who have been marginalized by successive governments controlled by Sri Lanka - 's Sinhalese majority. More than 70,000 people have been killed in the violence.Discuss this story

Latest fighting in Sri Lanka kills 35 rebels 7 soldiers, military says
Associated Press, April 27, 2008. COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) _ Sri Lanka's military says 35 Tamil Tiger rebels and seven soldiers have been killed in the latest fighting in the island's restive north.

Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara says the deadliest fighting Saturday was on the front lines of Welioya, where 22 insurgents and seven soldiers died. One soldier is reported missing.

Thirteen other rebels have been killed in separate battles in the Jaffna, Vavuniya and Mannar districts, Nanayakkara says.
