Military: Sri Lanka air force bombs rebel air strip; 16 killed in clashes

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) Sri Lankan air force jets bombed an air strip used by Tamil Tiger rebels, while 16 insurgents were killed in ground clashes in the north, the military said Saturday. President Mahinda Rajapaksa said the rebel group has ``demonstrated to the world its total commitment to violence and terror to achieve its separatist goals in Sri Lanka, and its absolute contempt for democracy and human rights.''

The rebels, blamed for more than 240 suicide attacks, have been listed as a terror organization by the United States and European Union.Discuss this story

Significant gains made: Sri Lanka

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s military on Saturday claimed that its forces “engaged in counter-terrorist offensives to liberate Wanni” and reached the Palampiddi junction in Vavuniya district. In recent days, the military has claimed to have made substantial advance in LTTE-held areas in Mannar and Vavuniya districts. In April, the military moved into areas in the vicinity of Madu church in Mannar district.

A Defence ministry statement claimed that that troops reached to Palampiddi junction without much resistance as the LTTE cadres had fled. More...Discuss this story

Sri Lankan military says it captured key northern town from Tamil rebels
Associated Press, Sat May 17, 2008 09:24 EDT . - - COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) Sri Lanka - 's military says it has captured a strategic town from Tamil Tiger rebels in the island's restive north.

Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara says soldiers have taken control of Palampiddi town in Vavuniya district.

Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan was not immediately available for comment.Discuss this story
