Sri Lanka says 10000 civilians flee fighting

The Sri Lankan government said Sunday that more than 10,000 civilians have fled fighting between government forces and Tamil rebels in northern Sri Lanka over the past week, a "sudden increase" in people displaced by the violence. Most of the 10,501 displaced civilians are from Kilinochchi, while others are from the Jaffna peninsula, according to a news release from Sri Lanka's defense ministry. More than half are women and children, it said. The government said it is providing refuge, medical care, and sustenance to the displaced civilians. More...

Sri Lanka navy destroys 2 rebel boats
Associated Press, Sun February 8, 2009 08:04 EST . COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) The Sri Lankan navy says it has destroyed two Tamil Tiger rebel boats off the northeastern coast, killing at least six rebels.

Navy spokesman Capt. D.K.P Dassanayake said the navy spotted the boats about 10 miles off the northeast coast early Sunday and attacked them, destroying both.

He said the navy recovered two rebel bodies following the attack and believes at least six rebels were killed.

There was no immediate comment from the rebels.Discuss this story
