US shelves evacuation of Tamils caught in LTTE areas
rediff, March 12. The Obama administration has shelved the idea of launching a massive military evacuation of nearly 200,000 Tamil civilians trapped in the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam strongholds, sources have told Rediff India Abroad.

Sources acknowledged that the plan was for US Air Force [Images] and US Navy units attached to its Pacific Command (PACOM) to go into the rebel-held hold-outs and evacuate these civilians faced with the prospect of fast-declining food and medicine stocks in these areas.

But sources said that a US team that had gone out to these areas "to look at the possibilities for just this kind of thing (evacuation)," had concluded that "this is not likely in the current situation because that is not what the military calls a 'permissive' environment -- which means the two sides are not firing at each other and the two sides both agree to this." Sri Lankan Forces Kill Tamil Tiger Finance Chief During Clashes
bloomberg, March 12. March 12 (Bloomberg) -- Sri Lankan security forces killed the Tamil Tigers’ finance chief during clashes in the northeast of the island nation, the Defense Ministry said, as rebel suicide bombers staged attacks on government troops in the region. Subarathnam Selvatureiy, who operated under the nom de guerre Thamilendi, died in fighting east of Puthukkudiyirippu, a garrison town captured from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam last week, the ministry said in a statement late yesterday. “Thamilendi was a high profile LTTE leader and he handled the LTTE’s bank accounts, tax collecting and all other matters relating to the outfit’s finances,” the ministry said. There was no immediate comment on the LTTE’s Peace Secretariat Web site. Selvatureiy’s March 10 death came on the day Black Tigers, members of the rebel’s suicide unit, killed more than 50 soldiers in an attack near Puthukkudiyirippu, the TamilNet news service said yesterday, citing an unidentified LTTE official. Sri Lanka’s government says it is on the verge of defeating the LTTE, which has waged a 26-year campaign for a separate Tamil homeland. The army says it has driven the group into an area of less than 55 square kilometers (21.2 square miles) in the country’s northeast after capturing its main bases since January. More...

Rebel Leader Reported Killed in Sri Lanka  - voanews.com

Heavy fighting in north Sri Lanka
BBC, 11 March. There has been further heavy fighting in the north-east of Sri Lanka, the military and sources close to Tamil Tiger rebels say.

The army says that in the latest clashes it has killed a senior rebel leader, Sabaratnam Selvathurai.

The pro-rebel TamilNet website says more than 50 soldiers were killed in the clashes and army artillery seized.

There is no way of confirming either side's claims. Independent journalists are not allowed in the war zone.

Correspondents say that Sabaratnam Selvathurai is one of the oldest confidantes of the rebel leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran. His death, if confirmed, would be a major blow to their morale.

The military says that Mr Selvathurai - also known as Thamilenthi - was killed in fighting at the weekend around the rebel-held town of Puthukkudiyiruppu.

Sri Lanka's army website said he had been "confirmed killed in the weekend fighting in the north-east of Puthukkudiyirippu where over 150 dead bodies of Tiger terrorists were found after the clashes".

He would be the second senior leader to be killed in government attacks. In 2007, the head of the rebels' political wing, SP Tamilselvan, was killed in an air strike.

Rebel officials have not commented on reports of Mr Selvathurai's death. He was reportedly in charge of their financial unit. More...
