Support to LTTE will hurt cause of Sri Lankan Tamils: BJP
xinhua, 24 march. Chennai, Mar 24 (PTI) The BJP today said any support to the LTTE in Tamil Nadu would hurt the cause of Sri Lanka Tamils, as the image of the banned outfit has suffered a "setback" in the state following its involvement in the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

BJP state president L Ganesan, in a statement here said some persons from Tamil Nadu were vocally supporting the outlawed unit in the name of backing Sri Lankan Tamils and their actions went against the sovereignty and integrity of the nation.

Sri Lanka president vows to rebuild rail line
taiwan news, 24 march. Sri Lanka's president has vowed to rebuild a vital rail link to the north of the island that has been cut for nearly two decades because of civil war. The Colombo to Jaffna "Yal Devi" train has not run since 1990 after being repeatedly bombed by Tamil rebels fighting to create a separate state in the north and east of Sri Lanka.

In a speech late Monday, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said re-establishing the rail link was an important way to show that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam had been defeated.

"It is the undeniable reality that in the past the sound of the Yal Devi was akin to the heartbeat of the nation," he said.

The train currently goes to Vavuniya, 130 miles (210 kilometers) north of the capital, Colombo. Jaffna is another 55 miles (90 kilometers) further north. Until early January, the area between Vavuniya and Jaffna was controlled by the Tamil Tigers.

But a huge government offensive has confined the rebels back to about 11 square miles (28 square kilometers) of jungle and beach on the northeastern coast. Government ministers say they expect to finish off the rebels soon.

Rajapaksa did not give a time frame or cost for extending the line to Jaffna, a peninsula in the far north that is the traditional home of Tamil culture. He appealed to India, China and Japan for help in completing the line. More...

Sri Lanka fury at 'aid coalition'
BBC, 24 march. Thousands of civilians have been displaced by the fighting

The Sri Lankan government has attacked what it calls a "vicious coalition" of aid and humanitarian agencies for their actions over the country's civil war.

The defence ministry said those "pretending to be humanitarian and aid agencies" were prolonging the conflict "to secure their income".

Rights and aid groups have continued to criticise both the government and Tamil Tiger rebels over civilian casualties.

A new Human Rights Watch report again condemns "indiscriminate shelling".

'Hardcore cadre'

The defence ministry website said the "vicious coalition" that had "been pretending to be humanitarian agencies, aid agencies, free media, civil rights movements, etc, have made the continued bloodshed on Sri Lankan soil a lucrative business for them". More...
