ENS, 29 Mar 2010. COLOMBO: Detained former Sri Lanka Army Commander Sarath Fonseka received thousands of dollars for his presidential election campaign from a diplomat of another Asian country, Lakbimanews reported on Sunday.

The paper said that the diplomat, along with an intelligence official, had arrived in the country days before the January 26 election.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) that found US $527,000; £100 sterling; and Sri Lankan Rupees (SLRs) 15 million in the bank lockers of Asoka Tillekaratne, mother of Fonsekaís son-in-law Danuna Tillekaratne, was trying to find out if these funds were given by the foreign diplomat. Troubled beginning for the released Tamil refugees ht.
ht, march 28. The Sri Lankan government claims to have resettled more than 1.9 lakh displaced Tamils. But for thousands of the resettled the problems are far from over; a release from military-guarded camps hasnít exactly translated into a new, bright beginning.

The funding, the report added, was suspended from the 8th of this month.

"The level of services decreased at the beginning of March due to funding gaps, the report said, adding that shelter agencies were challenged to secure funds for and build permanent housing in a timeframe corresponding with the pace of returns.

Earlier this month, HT had reported how both the remaining refugees and the resettled were complaining how food and other donations had been cut. More...Discuss this story
