Sri Lanka ruling party wins huge majority
afp, april 21. COLOMBO (AFP) – Sri Lanka's ruling party has won a near two-thirds majority in parliament at national polls, the elections commission said in final results announced Wednesday.

President Mahinda Rajapakse's United People's Freedom Alliance secured 140 seats in the 225-member assembly after a re-poll Tuesday in two constituencies where violence disrupted the April 8 vote, official results showed. More...Discuss this story

Sri Lanka finishes parliament vote hit by violence
Reuters, April 20. NAWALAPITIYA, Sri Lanka (Reuters) - Sri Lankans voted Tuesday in two districts where violence forced the annulling of their ballots in an April 8 poll that gave President Mahinda Rajapaksa's alliance a commanding parliamentary majority.

More than 1,000 police officers and soldiers were on hand in the Central Province district of Nawalapitiya, about 60 km (38 miles) east of the capital Colombo, to prevent the mayhem which engulfed the area on April 8.

Election monitors reported no violence Tuesday. But one opposition polling agent had been temporarily prevented from entering a voting centre in an environment rife with intimidation. More...Discuss this story

55 percent turnout in Re-poll held today, Lanka set to get new cabinet
air, april 21. An estimated 55 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the 37 polling booths of the Kandy and Trincomalee districts in Sri Lanka for which re-polling was held today. The Election Commissioner had ordered the re-poll following complaints of irregularities at some of the polling booths and withheld results of parliamentary constituencies for both the districts.
