Sri Lanka president names party veteran Jayaratne as PM
bbc, april 21. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed one of his party's elder statesmen as prime minister.

DM Jayaratne, a former teacher in his 70s, was sworn in on Wednesday. MPs will choose a new Speaker on Thursday.

Mr Rajapaksa is working out who will be in his new cabinet after final official results confirmed his alliance had won a landslide in parliamentary elections.

The result was delayed for nearly two weeks because of repolls in some areas hit by violence the first time round. Mr Jayaratne recently said that "everyone" wanted him to be the next premier and that people in Buddhist and Hindu temples, mosques and churches all over the island were invoking divine blessings to secure the post for him. Jayaratne to be sworn in as Sri Lanka's new PM
AFP, 2010-04-21. A senior member of Sri Lanka's ruling party Dissanayake Mudiyanselage Jayaratne is to be sworn in as the new prime minister, official sources confirmed Wednesday.

Jayaratne, 79, is to replace former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake. Jayaratne entered parliament in 1970 and has held several senior ministerial positions.

Analysts said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had recognized Jayaratne's loyalty to Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the dominant party in the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance in opting for him over several others including the president's brother Basil Rajapaksa.

The post of prime minister is largely symbolic in the island's executive presidential system of government. More...Discuss this story
