Sri Lanka’s new parliament sat for the first time on Thursday with the family of Mahinda Rajapaksa, president, cementing its grip on power amid words of defiance from the dissident former armed forces chief.The parliament unanimously voted to appoint Chamal Rajapaksa, the president’s brother as speaker, a key post that commands the power to decide the legislative agenda and direct impeachment motions against the president.Another brother, Basil, was elected to the 225-seat parliament, along with the president’s son, Namal. Sri Lanka shares at new peak on earnings, stability hopes
reuters, apr 23. COLOMBO, April 22 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's shares hit a new record high on Thursday on hopes over positive earnings and political stability under a newly elected government expected to bring more investment to the island nation. The All-Share Price Index .CSE of the Colombo Stock Exchange hit a new all-time high of 4,099.88 points, surpassing its previous high of 4,052.10 on Wednesday. It closed 0.96 percent firmer at 4,077.55.

"Expectations on better company earnings and political stability drove the market," said an analyst on condition of anonymity. "But it does not warrant this rise. The market is getting over-heated." More...Discuss this story

Sri Lanka's Fonseka says govt trying to silence him
afp, April 22. COLOMBO (AFP) – Sri Lanka's former army chief told AFP on Thursday his ongoing court martial was an attempt by the government to silence him and prevent his "fight for democracy" from the floor of parliament.

Sarath Fonseka was briefly released from military custody for the opening of parliament, in which he won a seat in elections two weeks ago.

"Today I was restrained because of the ceremonial occasion, but I will make use of the parliament to fight for democracy and to protect the constitution," he told AFP by telephone in his first interview since his arrest on February 8. More...>Discuss this story
