Sri Lankans asylum seekers 'panicked' after stricken boat ran out of food, water

FIVE Australia-bound asylum-seekers who perished at sea set themselves adrift in a fatal attempt to find a passing ship after their wooden fishing boat ran out of fuel, food and drinking water. As the remaining 59 Sri Lankans from the boat arrived yesterday at Christmas Island after being rescued and the Australian Federal Police began investigating the incident, new details emerged about the tragedy. The master of the vessel that rescued the 59 Sri Lankans, Oleg Chechulin, told The Australian he believed that the passengers aboard the boat had panicked after spending more than 20 days at sea. Civil initiative for Lanka reconstruction sought
ENS, may 11. CHENNAI: A Civil initiative to help reconstruction process in Sri Lanka was stressed by a panel of experts at a symposium here on Saturday. Speaking at the symposium ‘Sri Lanka, What Next’ organised by The Sunday Indian, former head of Intelligence of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka, Col Hariharan (retd), said there is a need to evolve a structure where the grassroots could participate in any resettlement. Highlighting the role of the Union government, he said, “India did not use its position effectively to evolve a solution to the Sri Lankan issue.” “India’s strategic advantage in Sri Lanka suffered a huge blow with the defeat of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Tamil leaders call for day of mourning to mark 'catastrophe' after Sri Lankan war victory

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Ethnic Tamil leaders called Monday for a day of mourning for civilians killed during Sri Lanka's 25-year civil war, as the government prepared to celebrate the one-year anniversary of its victory over Tamil Tiger rebels. Sri Lanka's conflict ended in May 2009 after a massive military operation against the Tigers in their stronghold in the country's north.
