Anatomy of a terror finance investigation
NP, May 15. At 9:22 p.m. on March 14, 2008, members of the RCMP's counter-terrorism squad in British Columbia pulled over a gray Mazda 3 and arrested the driver for financing terrorism.

It was a first for Canada.

For more than a decade, Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers rebels had fundraised in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver to finance their liberation struggle, but this was the first time anyone had been criminally charged over it.

Govt extends ban on LTTE for another two years
TOI, May 15. NEW DELHI: India on Friday extended its ban on LTTE for another two years as it believes the `Tamil Eelam' (separate homeland for Tamils) concept still remains a goal among pro-Tigers groups in Tamil Nadu.

The outfit, involved in assassination of former PM Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, has been banned since 1992 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. More...Discuss this story

Sri Lanka's Tamil expats try to revive separatist movement with 'government in exile'
IPS, may 14. COLOMBO // A year after government troops crushed Tamil separatist guerrillas and ended 26 years of civil war, a political solution addressing the root causes of the ethnic conflict still eludes Sri Lanka, analysts say.

The slow progress in addressing Tamil grievances has already opened dangerous political space to pro-separatist Tamils living abroad.

Earlier this month, members of the million-strong Tamil diaspora in the West, mostly in Canada, the UK, the US, Germany, France and Switzerland, where there are large Tamil communities, conducted unofficial polls and elected a “government-in-exile”. More... Discuss this story
