A bitter peace
ABC, May 24. The end of May marks the first anniversary of the end of Sri Lanka's long running and seemingly intractable civil war. This time last year, current President Mahinda Rajapakse announced victory for the government over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the death of its elusive leader Velupillai Prabhakaran who had waged an armed rebellion for an independent Tamil state for over 26 years. Statement at the Conclusion of the IMF Staff Mission to Sri Lanka
IMF, May 24. An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission led by Mr. Brian Aitken visited Colombo May 12-21 to hold discussions on performance and policies under the $2.6 billion Stand-By Arrangement, approved on July 24, 2009. The mission met with officials from the Central Bank, the Ministry of Finance & Planning, the Presidential Tax Commission, and other government ministries and departments, as well as representatives of civil society and the private sector. Sri Lanka level series
SkyNews, May 23. Sri Lanka hit back in convincing style to level the Pearls Cup series after a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand. The Black Caps were dismissed for a total of 81, with Sri Lanka needing only 15.3 overs to chase down the target.
