India will work with TNA: PM
IANS, July 11. COLOMBO: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has told a delegation of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) that India has decided to work with it to find solutions to the short term and long term problems faced by the Tamils of the island nation. This was revealed by TNA MP, M.A.Sumanthiran, who was a member of the delegation which met the Indian PM in New Delhi on Thursday. Sumanthiran told the Express that Singh went on to ask the TNA to work with other Tamil parties so that a joint Tamil view could be presented to the Sri Lankan government on various issues. More...

Sri Lankan Minister ends fast
Hindu, July 10. COLOMBO: A Sri Lankan Cabinet Minister who was on a fast unto death outside the United Nations office ended his protest after President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited him. Housing Minister Wimal Weerawansa went on fast on Thursday demanding scrapping of a three-member panel of experts appointed by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to advice him on alleged human rights violations during the war between Sri Lankan forces and the LTTE. Mr. Rajapaksa also rejected Mr. Weeawansa's resignation and is believed to have advised him to call off the protest. US "dismayed" at treatment to UN official in Sri Lanka

Washington: The US on Saturday said it was "deeply dismayed" at the treatment meted out to a top UN official in Sri Lanka and asked the Rajapaksa government to take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of UN personnel and premises there.
