Sri Lankan panel to start work
The Hindu, 2010-08-09 07:03:00 EST. The Commission on “Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation” constituted by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa is scheduled to hold its first public sitting on August 11 here.

Besides six sittings here, it would have two sittings in Vavuniya district in the north this month.

The Commission has been appointed under Section 2 of the Commission of Inquiry Act to probe the incidents leading to the war between the LTTE and the security forces.

The Commission has been given the mandate to attend to the concerns and recommend measures to ensure that there will be no recurrence of such a situation in the interest of national unity and reconciliation among all communities. More...Discuss this story

US, Sri Lanka for joint humanitarian assistance - ISRIA (registration), 2010-08-08 17:32:31 EST. Representatives from the United States Pacific Command will join Sri Lankan partners to provide humanitarian and civic assistance to civilians in central and western Sri Lanka as part of Operation Pacific Angel 2010 scheduled from 14 – 22 August.

Operation Pacific Angel is a joint humanitarian assistance operation conducted in the Pacific to support U.S. Pacific Command's capacity-building efforts, stated US Air Force [13th Air Force].

They also said that this humanitarian and civic assistance programme is aimed at improving military-civic cooperation between the United States and countries throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
