Canada hospitals, jails prepare for Sri Lanka refugees
AFP, August 12, 2010. VANCOUVER Canadian officials prepared hospital beds and jail cells Thursday hours ahead of the expected arrival of a cargo ship thought to be carrying hundreds of Tamil refugees fleeing Sri Lanka.

Between 200 and 500 refugees, including women and children, are believed to be aboard the MV Sun Sea, a cargo ship flying a Thai flag, in an incident that has highlighted concern over the plight of Sri Lanka's Tamil minority.

Sri Lanka has repeatedly rejected a United Nations probe into alleged rights abuses during the final stages of its long civil war, which ended with government troops defeating the Tamil Tiger rebels in May 2009. More...
