Rajapksa defends amendment move
The Hindu, 2010-09-04 06:33:00 EST. Amid growing criticism from the opposition and sections of the media, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has defended the decision of his government to amend the Constitution. The amendments, which have been referred by the government to the Supreme Court for its opinion, are scheduled to be debated and voted in Parliament on September 8, 2010. Given recent defections from the ranks of the opposition, the government, as of now, has the required two-thirds majority in Parliament. General VK Singh to visit Sri Lanka to strengthen military ties - Sify, 2010-09-03 18:42:53 EST. To strengthen bilateral military ties with Sri Lanka, Army Chief General VK Singh will embark on a three day visit to the island nation on Sunday. During this trip, General Singh will have discussions with Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse, and Prime Minister DM Jayaratne. The Army Chief will also hold talks with all three-service chiefs of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces in Colombo.
