Sri Lanka accused of trying to silence corruption watchdog - Lanka Business Online, 2010-10-06 12:18:35 EST. Oct 06, 2010 (LBO) - The Sri Lankan government is trying to suppress exposures of state corruption by launching criminal investigations against the Sri Lankan branch of Transparency International (TISL), a corruption watchdog, a rights body said. Hong Kong based Asian Human Rights Commission said TISL had been summoned before the island's Financial Investigation Unit in what it called "the abuse of the criminal justice process to suppress discussions relating to corruption." Sri Lanka police 'ban critical posters' - Khaleej Times, 2010-10-05 21:21:16 EST. Sri Lanka’s opposition on Tuesday said police have been ordered to arrest activists who put up posters criticising President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s backing of a prison term for a former army chief who ran against him.

However, police said the order was intended to prevent posters being placed in prohibited areas.

Rajapaksa last week upheld a court-martial finding Sarath Fonseka guilty of corruption while serving as army commander, which means the ex-general will lose the parliamentary seat he won after failing in his presidential bid. More...Discuss this story

Sovereign bond investors should buy debt of Sri Lanka over Vietnam as the island nation progresses in setting aside three decades of war to record economic growth that outpaces its rival, according to Nomura Holdings Inc.
